Superior Quality Pumice
An industrial materials company can be very good at what they do—competitive pricing, logistical expertise, consistency on spec, innovative and efficient production methods—but without a quality product, the high ground simply can’t be held. And while we pride ourselves on all of the above...we also count ourselves fortunate that our pumice deposit is world-class.
Over 70-percent of our processed pumice is exported into countries and regions that often have domestic pumice sources nearby—because our customers require a superior quality pumice product.
Worldwide, our pumice enjoys advantages in whiteness (GE brightness of 84), hardness (Mohs’ scale 6), density (specific gravity of 2.35 g/cc) and natural purity. Our deposit has a confirmed yield in the millions of tons. Three modern processing facilities and a state-of-the-art testing lab ensure we can consistently deliver to the ordered specification.
Specialized impurity extraction technologies, combined with the natural characteristics of the deposit, allow for extremely high purity content (98% - 99.8%, depending on grade)
Low unit weight (40 - 50lbs per cubic foot, depending on grade)
Consistent MOHS of 6
Superior friability characteristics
Reported abrasive benefits of 25% - 50% over all other available pumice worldwide
FOB pricing consistently the lowest in industry (depends on grade) due to advantageous economies of scale and tight logistics control
Large warehouse and unsurpassed processing capability allow for rapid response to customers’ needs
Custom blending available to meet the most exacting customer specifications
Pumice, due to its amorphous characteristics, is not considered a health risk to the workers who handle it. (See downloadable Safety Data Sheets in the page sidebar.

Confirmed source pumice reserves yield in the millions of tons
Hess Pumice is continuously testing our product to ensure superior quality. Among the most common tests that we perform in-house are:
Sieve Size Analysis (ASTM C-136)
Particle Size Analysis by Laser Diffraction (ASTM B822-10)
Whiteness (Datacolor “Check” method)
Heavy Minerals Analysis
In-House Test Method: Split sample 25 to 50 grams and shake for 10-20 minutes on Ro-Tap type sieve shaker. Use standard 8-inch U.S. Mesh testing sieves.
We also submit product samples to outside laboratories for third-party verification in the following areas:
Bacteria plate count
We adhere to a strict inspection policy and are compliant with all ISO 9000/2008 standards.
Every lot of product (maximum of five pallets) is tested a minimum of two times during the production process with samples being retained for at least one year. All quality and sales records are retained electronically as well as in hard-copy form.
We go to great lengths to ensure customer satisfaction in both our product and the entire purchasing experience.
